An instafamous Youtuber is lost in the Canadian Wilderness for 37 days.
Civili$ed debates the concept of Civilization without judgment in the iconic struggles of:
teen vs. nature teen vs. technology teen vs. teen
We made a movie in our pandemic
Because in the worst of times...
...we need laughter...
To remind us that even when you are lost, you can rescue your own damn self.
Here is our story....
From Student to Patient
Don't you hate it when you go to camp and end up battling for your life? Yeah, me too.
Chrysalis was an aspiring actor who received a merit scholarship to attend Interlochen. While at Interlochen International Arts Academy, Cahrysalis caught a virus that triggered HLH(Hemophagocytic Lympho Histiocystosis), a rare and very fatal disease.
HLH triggers an out of control autoimmune response, similar to Kawasaki disease and the Cytokine storms that cause fatalities with Covid 19.Treated with chemotherapy, HLH has a 80% mortality rate.
To this day, Interlochen never inquired how this teen is...or even refunded camp money that could have paid at least one ambulance ride...
From Remission to Pandemic
I have to wear a mask..oh wait, now everyone does! After her battle with HLH, teen was left with memory loss and cognitive dysfunction from the the Dexamethasone induced psychosis, Osteoporosis, PTSD, muscle loss, and extensive scarring.
Finally back to Sophomore life, within a few weeks the Covid 19 Global Pandemic took all this away.
Still immunosuppressed, teen watched as the world went though what she just battled: Wearing a mask and gloves, social distancing, an attention to hygiene, the mental stress of being isolated, and the terror of dying by Cytokine storm.
Far from home, without a home
Moon face is real, kids! Don't do Dex! Single mom family lived in hospitals for months, losing all income. A gofundme campaign raised $6000, which, added to the family's life savings, afforded them a RV to live in, parked on the street.
Happy healthy family now emotionally, physically, and financially devastated. The physical deformities form the drugs caused doctors to perceive teen as learning impaired, while bias against homelessness furthered discriminatory responses.
Homeless in a Pandemic
When you wake up to threatening notes on your windshields, it's a good indication of how your day is going to go! March 2020 Victoria is booked in GLOW. In the wardrobe fitting she is told to leave because of the pandemic, and the production never re-opens. There is no water in the grocery stores, and living in an RV, all water to drink and cook with is bottled. The gyms are shut down, so there is no place to shower. Campgrounds are shut down, so there is no place to dump their sewage or grey water.
Real life Nomadlanders
When you live in 50 square feet...make every foot beautiful! Still battling PTSD, both mom and daughter fought to make their home as nice as possible, repairing the damage of the hate crimes. But the lack of water, electricity, gyms, and the fear of an immunosuppressed child catching Covid 19 are too much.
Lets make a movie!
You know when there's a global pandemic? That's a good time to film! Instead of sinking into despair, they decided to embrace social distancing as an opportunity to film Civili$ed, a feature comedy. One camera crew, one actor, endless forests! Hiring local actors, staying quarantined and socially distanced, but enjoying the wilderness every day, mosquitos and all, this family used comedy to heal, and to inspire.
Film on cards needs to become film on big screen.
It was so fun filming, now we gotta do what? Wait, what???? Civili$ed is now on 100's of hours of 4K digital media cards, tricky to edit when you live offgrid in an RV! Civili$ed is a celebration of life, and a testament to creativity during the pandemic, while embracing the positive connections possible by social media.
